CORRECTIONS

- At 06:35 Dimitri Provoost spotted that some of the star and cross symbols on the diagonal red lines are accidentally swapped around. Good spot Dimitri!

- I think once or twice I say "card" when I mean "symbol". I blame too much time spent with projective planes.

- Let me know if you spot any other mistakes!

If you include the extra one card u need 6x5 not 5x5. 5x6 and 4 blanks is a 12.9% waste on press.

A full deck would be 9x7 but you have 6 blanks in last column. This is a massive amount of waste for a printing press. If you Remove two of them, you can the use the blank space to make the instructions, and waste as little as possible. 😀

@Askar Kalykov Watch it again

The missing cards are a result of limitations in the printing process. There is Math tuber called DorFuchs who contacted the publisher for this question. He also came up with your results.

@tribalguy2 yes, near top of left card, center right of right card

Your myriad: how to pick the correct set of 101 cards where no pairs are shared? Meaning every symbol only ever shows up twice? It's almost the thing you did. But you would have to simply make a dummy symbols that isn't shown.

1 uvor dobbel : spot the missing symbols in the pair. Lots of symbols, few cards.

Dobbel infinity: you have unlimited number of symbols and cards. But a limited number of symbols per card. Playable with your own photographs, like funny faces of friends.

You can lose a card without issues, but you can't add one easily.

Humble pi 2 lol

I remember that when learning about projective geometry, the lecturer actually brought this game to the lesson, I think.

another parker square!

You should do an "every day maths use/hacks" for the mathy and nonmathy types 👌

22:24 also spotted an arrow in a circle: a little down to the right from the tip of the left card and a bit to the right of the middle of the right card. Does that count? They seem almost identical except one seems to be a darker color

thanks sir for sharing your knowledge.it was very helpful for us.nicely explained.

Parker's pentagonal pages of proprietary poly-symbols.

It is so VERY on brand

Follow-up question: Is there a neat way to arrange the symbols such that you can't come up with a strategy to find the match?

I'm thrilled that you got rid of the backing music. I also loved the video as always.

Could you define "maximum fun to play" as every symbol needs a matching symbol on at least 1 other card? Then the rules are: Minimum symbols, Every symbol has at least 1 match Every card has exactly 1 match with any other card.

So let's say I'd like a Monomatch game with all the Pokémon as individual symbols, (898) was there a formula for how many cards that would turn out to be in the video?

omg, i worked for a university that had a before- and after-school program for elementary aged kids in each school around my city. the kids absolutely loved this game and it was being played constantly. it's such a genius game and i remember openly pondering to the kids i was playing with about how the math worked to create it.

parker square

Uh... What happens at 7:53? And how? And why?

Is Martin Harris asking for Trobble? Or is it Quadrobble?

How would you extrapolate this to a version, where you pick three cards, each of which has one symbol the same?

It's all fun and games, until someone publishes it as a paper.

Wait, you're getting close to a million subs? It seems like a month ago you were in low five digits.

18:10 reflection :)

I watched this a while back, wanted to generate my own dobble (for reasons which I won't go in to). I recall Matt saying cyclic difference sets are hard to generate, so I decided I would try to write some code for it. It's a simple recursive backtracking algorithm, not much fanciness. Wrote it in python and here it is: def check(nums, target): differences = 0 ind_diffs = set() mod = target * target - target + 1 for n1 in nums: for n2 in nums: diff = n1 - n2 diff = (diff + mod) % mod if diff: differences += 1 ind_diffs.add(diff) return len(ind_diffs) == differences def generate(target, current=None): current = current or [0] mod = target * target - target + 1 options = range(current[-1] + 1, mod) if check(current, target): if len(current) == target: return current for option in options: res = generate(target, current + [option]) if res: return res print(generate(8)) The code is surprisingly fast for small sizes of difference sets, but, I tried generating the length-102 set that you would need to generate Monomatch: Myriad, and it still hasn't finished running (over an hour). This makes sense, as recursive backtracking scales quite poorly (I think O(n!)), so I'm not surprised. In any case, I just wanted to share my findings. Cheers!

"genius or lazy?" ¿Que no los dos? Oh, for the printed cards, does that mean the Happy House is the ONLY matching symbol, or that it's in addition to the assorted other matches?

The Parker Square of Monomatch

I couldn't understand a thing but I still watched all 28 minutes of it

You just earned a sub by printing out 10302 unique symbols and 101 happy little houses.

"I don't know if that's genius or lazy" Is there a difference?

#RELEASE THE 57 DOBBLE CUT!

So when you reach 1M subs you will be completely bald? Every time I see you you have less hair

Parkermatch Myriad!

Made a real Parker Square out of Monomatch Myriad, didn't you? Good effort, Matt!

Not a chance of spotting that.

This is the best game to ever come in a Chick-fil-A kids meal, which is where we first found out about spot it, as we call it across the pond

parker square myriad edition

Subscribed. Good luck with the million!

In the monomatch myriad segment I also spotted the arrow in a circle symbol in both pentagon cards, have I hallucinated?

You should turn this into a mobile game.

I haven’t enjoyed watching a UKwill this much in awhile 👏

For Matt Parker, n now equals 5! The Parker Pentagon(s)!

CATCH THE MATCH!!! YESSS!!! REPRESENT!!!

I love the new style of video as much as I have loved humble pi, keep up with this great work!

Mistakes are part of the game. Owning your mistakes is the way we get better! Great video!

Maybe their die-cut press presses out 5 disks across the material. Then both versions having a multiple of 5 (55 and 30) makes plenty of sense.

why so much wasteful packaging?? they could literally sell that game in just the tin, but they have to go overboard & put that tin in some plastic & put it in a box. so stupid

And then they wrap the cards inside in further plastic... I think you can justify the cardboard a bit, just to protect the tin from getting dinged up in transport, but to then put the plastic on is overkill

We have catch the match, great game to play with kids!

4:36 Anyone notice the Fano Plane? *Edit:* I resumed the video after making this comment only for Matt to immediately announce the Fano Plane...

I paused at 22:26 and noticed a symbol the same on both cards other than the "Happy Little House". I saw that there was a symbol of an "arrow inside a circle" on both cards. The issue is that on the card on the left it is a pale blue color near the top of the card where as on the card on the right it is located a couple inches in from Matt's fingers as is what I see as a dark green color. Being as this was supposed to be a version of Dobble not Spot It, I feel variations in color are acceptable in making a match which would make 2 matches on this pair of cards.

Maybe the makers had ocd; they prefer multiples of 5 for the no. of cards

Just print the other 10203

Great video! As an engineering student, however, my inner manufacturer is pained by the fact that you chose to make your myriad out of pentagons rather than hexagons... hopefully there was some printing size limit that made the difference in wastage between the two shapes negligible?

If Lost was smart, they would've used 0, 1, 3, 13, 32, 36, 43 and 52 as The Numbers.

spot the happy little house is the new parker square

I wonder if that would make a good "bar coaster" game.

I love your ability to take giant mistakes, make them hilarious jokes, and then build a message that it's OK to be imperfect. Come for the laughs, stay for the life-changing attitude shift. And more laughs.

The reason all the cards aren’t there is so that there is a more rounded off number of cards for other variants of the game.

It is notable that 31 is prime, while 57 is only divisible into 3x19, and my suspicion is that in manufacture, they prefer being able to print in a wider grid, 5x11.

Say what you see? Someone been watching Catch Phrase lately?

Monomatch Parker square

This was an amazing video ! Great cinematography, really fun and the math is incredible !

Can you do the math of the card game Set?

In 2015, I helped design a similar card game with 73 symbols, 9 on each card, and 73 cards. So, an order of 8=2^3. I used Sage to generate the solution. I never quite understood the math, so I appreciate this video!

you: double dobble me, an intellectual: quadrobble

I found the happy little house but it took me a few minutes. That version is insane

25:25 you create a new mathematical tool: the crowdproof

The name of the pentagon game, made me think of a video with Tom Scott, where he talks about the origins of the words for numbers, and told that a myriad literally means 10.000, so yeah. Just thought it was a neat detail.

This is my favorite video you’ve ever made!!!! The humor, the math...I loved it. Better than the toilet one and the slo-no brick one which is saying a lot

"friends who have procreated" is a funny phrase to me for some reason

You should of just used a random number generator to pick them

Also technically dominos is mono match

I spotted the happy little house :3 took me many minutes of scanning but i spotted it

Well, you certainly Parker Pentagoned that lot!

Who lives in the happy little house? Wally? Waldo?

9:58

I’d missed Steve’s cameo when I first watched this 😁

"a game for negative 6 players" The game demands a blood sacrifice

Too bad they have 5 edges, otherwise these could have been yet another iteration of a Parker Square

I love combinatorics. Don't quite understand some of it, though. xddddddd

I didn't find this video until May 16. (sigh)

Oooh! Now I want a version with symbols per card (133 total cards and symbols), but I'm struggling at juggling the images... there are too many. Is there an easier way (a program or a file) for that? I need the 12 symbol version as a game, coz the 8-symbol is too fast and players keep bumping into each other due to finding matches simultaneously...

22:22 I also see the arrow with a circle around it on both cards, although they have a different color, but, i thought that was the point of this version of the game. Although i do also see the happy little house, but i'm not entirely sure if they have the same color as well, one looks a bit lighter, but that might just be the angle.

6:53 Imagine a mechanical lock needing that many pins to align to unlock.

7:30 It's like light going through a prism and showing the rainbow.

0:04 It also says that the hour-glass is 15 feet tall.

The end was the best part! What a mess you have made sir!

It's all about beating his friend

IAM not here because I loves your explanation in you have been warned but I randomly found you

How do you even go about shuffling these 10k+ cards?

the reason Dobble is missing those two cards is to throw off the leads of those who try to figure out its secrets

THE PARKER MYRIAD

22:23 the fact that you used multiple symbols that represent the same thing is downright evil

So "execute order 66" is just a very long project of making Dobble cards?

A very fun video, plus its nice to see you admit the huge gaff with the smiley house. I was going to put my hand up for some but I only saw this vid today, waaay too late.

The sick brake fifthly guarantee because acknowledgment luckily compete over a icky plasterboard. odd, breakable hat

I assume the reason they miss out some of the cards is to they can identify when a clone 'rip off' version of the game has just taken their game and changed the symbols, similar to a Trap Street on a map.

can we get a "the number that matt just made up" player game?
