I remember hearing about a locksmith in North Queensland who'd do this with that camera doctors look in your ears with. You could bring him any lock and he'd make a key for it. Apparently out of jail and went straight. Guess that's why he was in jail

I'd imagine the legality of this is equal to picking a lot. Legal if you own the lock, illegal if you don't.

So...just briefly visit someone's place, use this, go home, make the key, wait until the right opportunity to return to that person's place later, enter, walk to the kitchen, drink out of the milk carton, use toilet without lifting the seat, poop in the trashcan, try on the wife's brassieres, and leave when you hear the owner pull up in the driveway.

Depending on the design and encryption used in wifi locks signal intercept is possible as well. Plus LPL has opened his share of electronic locks through design faults or other low skill attacks. It all comes down to how much effort the lock companies put into their products. This type of information is already out there, criminals already have access to it and the value of what LPL does is to present it to the mass public to raise awareness in the products we use and hopefully to force the lock companies to improve their design and construction. You might feel bad to realize that your locks are actually very vulnerable, but how is that any worse than being vulnerable and not even know about it?

I don't understand why the US still insists on using such primitive keys and flimsy locks which apparently provide almost no safety. To me, it seems that dimple or pin keys are much safer and harder to pick.

Ha ha, there seems to be a fundamental principle that people donโ€™t understand: if there is a lock, it can be picked. Just the same as with programming, which always can be hacked. It is only a question of time, resources, and skill.

I will bet my house that since LPL is so security conscious in the physical realm that he is also super vigilant in the virtual realm. Which is why I think he uses his old phone for trials such as this so as to not risk corruption/virus on his current phone.
